It’s been a long time since Canon shocked the industry with the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM – approximately 15 years ago, and this time, Canon said, we can do better. And they did, they made it wider and faster – and the result is an impressive 7-14mm focal range that starts at f/2.8. This fisheye lens is rather unique as it offers two different flavors of image projection onto the sensor. At the lens’s widest focal length, the lens produces a circular image with a 180-degree angle of view, and at 14mm, the image will cover the entire full-frame image sensor with a field of view of 114 degrees diagonally. This allows the lens to capture images in a variety of new, unique, and artistic ways. The choice gives a fantastic level of creative choice without performing any lens swapping. The Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 Fisheye Zoom is weather sealed with an impressive array of seals to protect against moisture and dust ingress into the lens. As well, the lens features Canon’s fluorine coatings to help you keep water and fingerprints off the large exposed front element. If you are in need of adding filters to this lens, Canon has you covered with a rear filter holder. This article will be updated as we receive more information and details, so come back often to check to see what we’ve added to it, including our preliminary analysis of the MTF and lens construction. We get to take a look inside this lens with another laser-cut-in-half image, and as well, even more interestingly, get to see how the elements zoom from one end of the focal length to the other. Enjoy, it’s rather hypnotic. Since Canon did at one time make the Canon EF 8-15mm Fisheye, we can compare the MTFs to see how Canon has fared in fisheye zoom optical designs over the last 15 years. Canon Japan has released the MTF diagram for the Canon RF 7-14mm Fisheye, and it does not disappoint. In terms of contrast across the field of view, the lens will achieve a much greater level of contrast, and as well, the resolution of the lens across the frame is also greatly improved. The resolution tails off after 20mm on the widest part of the frame, because it’s, well, a fisheye, and there’s bound to be some resolution loss at the corners. This is certainly a remarkable improvement over it’s predecessor.
